6 Hacks to Freshen Your Home for Spring

In spring, Australia begins to enjoy a feeling of freshness and regeneration. The flowers (and pollen) come out, and the air starts to warm. Nature aside, spring also offers a solid opportunity to give your home a deep spring clean.
This is particularly important if you have a forthcoming rental inspection and need to shake the dust from previous months.

If you’re renting, there are some quick, easy and affordable ways to give your home a complete refresh and leave it sparkling at its best for spring.

Tick these simple tips off your to-do list to give your home a total seasonal refresh:

Clean up your house

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned scrubbing to give your home a new lease of life. Now, I know cleaning isn’t for everyone, but clean houses are: You will enjoy your home so much more once you’ve dusted off that dusty winter layer which can make your rental feel stale.

You might like to get up close and personal with a few of the neglected items that are sometimes overlooked in day-to-day cleaning. Look at your windows, gutters and those rarely-used drawers and cupboards which have an ability to attract junk and clutter.

De-clutter your possessions

On the topic of clutter – let’s consider decluttering. It goes hand-in-hand with cleaning because you have an opportunity to clear out any item that screams ‘unwanted,’ ‘broken,’ or ‘unnecessary’. Even with the best of intentions, clutter has a way of creeping up on you and multiplying while you’re not looking.

You can’t achieve your springtime clean-slate with an overflowing closet or endless trinkets scattered around your living room. Give some of your key areas around the house a once-over and sell, give away or donate anything you’re no longer using.

Air everything out

One of the easiest and most effective ways to make your home feel (and smell) like new, is to throw open ALL your windows. If you have fans in the house, get those going too. Winter has a tendency to make us close everything up. The upside? You stay warm. The downside? You end up breathing in the same stagnant, recycled air.

There is no substitute for letting a fresh breeze in and kicking those old germs out. If you’re still experiencing some chilly days at your end of the world, this is a very important step! Turn off the heat and open the windows for an hour – it will have a huge impact.

Transition the wardrobe

As most of us know, spring is one of the most unpredictable seasons, weather-wise. The days can swing wildly from summer temperatures to biting cold. But as we near October and the weather warms up, it’s a good opportunity to start thinking about storing your heaviest and bulkiest knits and boots away to make room for blazers, cardigans and jackets. This could be an opportunity to introduce new hues into your colour scheme!

Bring in some blooms

Put a bunch of cheerful flowers in a vase, and your house instantly says, ‘Spring!’ In large rooms where the fragrance won’t be too overpowering, why not try for sweetly perfumed flowers? Even adding a few plants around your rental could make all the difference

Move your furniture

Every time you change the furniture around, it can give your home a new, fresh feel. They say a change is as good as a holiday – and in this instance, all it takes is a change in furniture positioning. Look at how your space flows. Could you move your furniture around to give your room a better flow? Maybe swap out some furniture pieces, such as a coffee table. It could make all the difference to the feel of a room. If you’re planning to move out soon, try to remove some bigger furniture pieces completely to give you a spacious feel while you are moving.

At the end of the day, remember that spring is a season for the senses. It’s time to refresh, reboot and re-energise. While it might take a little effort to bring Spring in, the resulting feeling will be well worth your time.
