The Surgeon's Cottage
Built in 1841, ‘The Surgeon’s Cottage’ has known many lives in its 180 years. Originally built using convict labour and locally made bricks to serve as additional accommodation for the Plough Inn alongside, it has also seen service as both a schoolhouse and prison lock-up.
Its most prominent historical role though, was as a surgery and doctor’s residence. It was in this period that it acquired its unofficial, but widely used local name.
After the Second World War, the surgery became a private residence and has remained so ever since. It is now available for purchase by a fortunate buyer to build a new and happy life amidst the history and charm of this delightful cottage.
The garden at the rear, is both whimsical and functional. It has mature Walnut, Oak, Twisted willow and Mulberry trees, as well as younger peach, plum, apple and apricot trees, all of which are now giving good crops of fruit.
There is also a large vegetable garden and a very contented small flock of assorted bantam chicken breeds which, should the buyer wish, can remain with the cottage, the only home they have known.
The house is connected to the NBN, has town and tank water and a large hot water service which is less than six months old. There are also 18 solar panels which minimise the power bills dramatically.
There is a large second building on the block which has most recently served as an atelier for the cottage’s artist owner. This could easily be re-purposed into a granny flat, guest room or teenager’s retreat.
The solar panels are set on the roof of this 2nd building, so there is no effect on the colonial appearance of the house itself. This building also houses a work-shop, lock up garage and a carport to the side.
A sympathetic extension was made at the rear of the cottage in the 1970’s. This has added extra living space as well as bathroom, toilet and laundry. This extension meant that The Surgeon’s Cottage was never heritage listed, giving a new owner greater scope should they ever wish to undertake additional work.
Carrick is a picturesque, heritage village in easy commuting distance of Launceston. The Surgeon’s Cottage is just one of many beautiful colonial homes in the village and is a very short walk to the historic Carrick Inn (Circa 1833) and the Post Office.
Northern Tasmania is one of the most beautiful regions in Australia and in Carrick, you will be right in the heart of it.
Opportunities to acquire truly historic properties such as this are very rare, and the lifestyle rewards are beyond price.
