A Brief History of the Old Convent…

Built in 1887, the ‘old’ convent was the first home of the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Australia. The 5 catholic nuns arrived from Ireland in Westbury on 24th May 1887 and established a school. At least one elderly Westbury resident recalls having piano lessons in the front gable room, taught by one of the sisters in the 1930’s.

In 1940 after the opening of a ‘new’ convent and school in the church grounds of the Holy Trinity Church next door, the ‘old’ convent was leased out and later sold into private hands.
